One of Mingus' best-known compositions,
"Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" (later renamed
"Theme for Lester Young") was originally
released on his 1959 album "Mingus Ah Um."
Mingus wrote it as an elegy for saxophonist
Lester Young, who had died two months prior
to the recording session.
This recording with
band leader and bass;
Don Pullen, piano;
George Adams, tenor saxophone;
Gerry Mulligan, baritone saxophone;
Benny Bailey, trumpet;
Danny Richmond, drums,
is at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1975.
